POISON AND THE POWER OF JESUS

hands-world

Uganda is a small country in eastern Africa of around 40 million people, with a constitution that guarantees freedom of religion, including right of conversion. Despite this, Christians are the subjects of attacks by their Muslim neighbors in the eastern third of the land, especially if they are converts from Islam.

Most recently, a 24-year old, woman named Sandra Summaya, converted to Christianity at church on Christmas Day 2016. When she shared it with her brother he got angry and insulted her. It greatly hurt her inside.

A week later, January 1st 2017, her family had gathered for a meal. Sandra’s uncle asked if she believed her Isa (Jesus) would protect her should she take poison. When she affirmed so, she was forced to take rat poison at around midnight, which she dared not refuse after what she had said.

She became seriously ill, including stomach pains and vomiting. She was dragged next to a bush, tied to a tree, and left to die.

Her cries woke up some Christians nearby who found her unconscious and had her rushed to the hospital. She remains there, and her condition has stabilized; however, she will remain in the hospital for a few more days as the medical personal monitor her situation.

Prayer Points:
• Pray for Sandra to continue to recover from the poison and for her protection from further harm.
• Pray for those ministering to Sandra during her recovery from the rat poison.
• Pray for the conversion of Sandra’s Muslim family and community by dreams and visions.
• Pray for the Church and officials in Uganda to know how to protect converts from Islam to Christ.
• Pray for Sandra to not doubt the Lord’s love and care at this time.

Prayer:

Oh Lord we lift up our sister Sandra Summaya to You. We thank You that You brought her to Yourself on Christmas Day, the day that You were born in Bethlehem. We thank You also that she refused to deny her faith even when her uncle asked her to drink poison as a sign of her trust in You. We also thank You that other Christians were willing to help her and she is recovering. We ask that You will by grace continue to work in her life and in the lives of those helping her. We pray that her family will come to You through her witness for You and for wisdom for officials in Uganda as they deal with the reality of persecution off Muslim converts to Christ in their land. Amen.

  1. Such a heartbreaking yet challenging story. Makes me consider how I would have reacted. I “say” I believe God would protect me, but really believe to go to such lengths causes me to recognize how lightly I take my faith at times.
